Stretch Yourself

Doing much stretching?

Just as it’s good to stretch underused muscles through exercise or yoga, it’s good to also stretch yourself in other ways as well. Those of you drawn to professional speaking whether as a career or a sideline, are also drawn to stretching. This is a career path that requires you to stretch every time you do a gig because, honestly, no matter how much you prepare, you’re only part of the equation.

And the other part of the equation – the audience, the sound system, the conference organizers, the weather conditions – is not under your control. Experience teaches you how to manage these factors, of course, but even so, you’ll find yourself taken by surprise from time to time.

So embrace the stretch and continue to learn. How great is it to have constant learning built into doing the work you love. Admit it, that’s part of the attraction. If you love being on the platform and in front of audiences, the biggest stretch for you might be the marketing aspect.

My advice is to be objective about yourself, to treat yourself as if you were your preferred client and look at your business model with clear eyes. You’ll be surprised at what you’ll see and you’ll likely find solutions to your most pressing obstacles.

Go for it. Have fun with it. Stretch yourself in a whole new direction.
